Part-Time Students
The Statewide Online Education Program established by the Utah Legislature in the 2011 General Session allows students to enroll in online classes on a part-time basis. The best thing about participating in online classes as a part-time student is your classes are free!
Public school, charter school, private school, and registered home school students may take free classes to supplement classes you are taking elsewhere. You may take up to six online courses (6.0 total credits) during the 2017-2018 school year from UTVA.

How do i sign up for classes?
- Enroll as a part-time student at UTVA. Please do NOT withdraw your student from any classes at the local high school until you've talked with the Part Time Coordinator, Robin Elmy. Click on this link: K12 Part-Time Enrollment to go to K12's website to enroll as a part-time student. Make sure to select Utah Virtual Academy's Part-Time School. If your student is currently enrolled at Utah Virtual Academy or has been in the past, even if they were a full-time student, you DO NOT need to complete this step.
- Fill out a class request form. Please go to Http://tinyurl.com/UTVA-PT-Enrollment-Request
and fill out the requested information. We need this information to finish enrollment and to submit a CCA funding request to the Utah State Office of Education so your classes will be free! - Contact UTVA's Part-Time Coordinator, Robin Elmy. Please let her know you have completed the first 2 steps and that you want to finish the registration process. She will confirm/enroll your classes and answer any questions you may have. You may email her at [email protected] or call her at 801-262-4922 ext 7110.
about our part-time online program
RIGOROUS CURRICULUM: UTVA uses the rigorous K12 college prep curriculum. Our courses are fully accredited and aligned with the Utah Core Education requirements.
FLEXIBILITY: Classes are flexible. This means that you may complete your assignments/lessons at any point during the week. All assignments/lessons for the week are due on Sundays at midnight. Teacher class sessions are recorded and can be viewed at any time. ELECTIVE & CORE COURSES: You may take either elective or core courses. BLOCK OR SEMESTER-LENGTH CLASSES: Classes are either a block-length (9-weeks) or semester-length format (standard 18-weeks) for next school year. Both semester-length and block-length classes will be worth 0.5 credits. SEMESTER-LENGTH CLASSES: UTVA offers classes in a standard 18-week semester-length for the 2017-2018 school year. Semester-length classes are worth 0.5 credits each. BLOCK-LENGTH CLASSES: Block-length classes can be completed in 9 weeks. There are 4 blocks during each school year. Semester 1 is split into Blocks 1 and 2. Semester 2 is split into Blocks 3 and 4. Block classes are worth 0.5 credits and cover the same amount of curriculum as a semester-length class. Block classes require the same amount of work to be completed as a regular 18-week semester-length class, and will need to be completed in half the time as a semester-length class. You may choose to take classes during any block. Suggestions for choosing a block (if you take more than one class) include taking classes during the same semester, but taking them during consecutive blocks to balance your work-load. TIME REQUIREMENT:
|
STATE REQUIREMENTS: Click on the link to see the Utah State Office of Education graduation requirements: http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/gradinfo/
COURSE LISTS: For a list of the courses we offer and their descriptions please click on one of the following link: http://www.k12.com/curriculum/high-school-program-courses/high-school-course-list.html Please remember: Language, Math, Science, Foreign Language and AP courses are taught all four quarters for 1.0 credit. All other courses and electives are taught in block schedule. REQUIREMENT TO DROP COURSE(S) AT YOUR PRIMARY SCHOOL: You will be required to drop one course at your primary school for every class you take from UTVA in order for your classes to be free if you are attending a public or charter school. You can't take more than a full schedule when you combine both school's courses. You may be required to pay for your course(s) at UTVA if you don't meet this requirement, please see exceptions below. If you are a private school or registered home school student you won't need to drop any courses. EXCEPTIONS TO THE REQUIREMENT TO DROP COURSE(S): If you are taking seminary during the school day, you are not required to drop a course out of your schedule. So if you take seminary twice during the school year, than this counts for 2 (1/2 credit) classes you would have had to drop. This is because you do not earn credit for seminary and take release time during the day. Another exception is if you have a CCRP plan for early graduation. The last exception is for make-up courses. SOMETIMES school districts will pay for students to make-up courses using the online program and not require them to drop a course. Paying for make-up course(s) is up to your school district's discretion. Registered home school and private school students are not required to drop classes for them to be free. HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT: The grades you receive for your classes count toward High School Graduation and will be sent to your school to be added to your high school transcript. EVENTS & CLUBS: Our part-time students are welcome to participate in both the in-person and virtual events and clubs offered to our full-time students.
